The cylinder contains a reservoir at each end from which a coloured liquid drips when turned over.
The regular little globules slide and drop down a series of curving ramps until they finally pool in the base, when the timer can again be turned and the process started again. This timer roughly measures 5 minutes, it is not an exact measure it is an approximation.
